A surgeon in the College of Medicine
at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has
reported that a simpler method for removing small benign breast
tumors can be successful in outpatient clinics.
V. Suzanne Klimberg, M.D., first
makes a small nick in the skin and then uses an ultrasound device
to guide removal of small benign tumors from the breast. The
procedure was earlier used only for biopsies of larger,
potentially malignant tumors. Dr. Klimberg, director of the UAMS
Breast Cancer Program, recommends the minimally-invasive procedure
for removal of non-cancerous breast tumors.
The American Journal of Surgery
will publish her findings in its December issue. She first
reported her findings at the April meeting of the Southwestern
Surgical Congress.
The Fashion Footwear Association of
New York provided funding for Dr. Klimberg's research. Dr.
Klimberg's Breast Cancer Program is part of the Arkansas Cancer
Research Center at UAMS.
