ACRC at UAMS To Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day

05-14-02 (Little Rock) The Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will host a local celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 3 p.m.  The event will be held in the Sam Walton Auditorium on the 10th floor of the ACRC facility located at Elm Street and Capitol Avenue on the UAMS campus in Little Rock. The event is free and open to all cancer survivors and their families.

The Arkansas celebration will be one of more than 700 other events taking place that same day across North America.  The purpose of the event will be to honor cancer survivors and those who support them and to call attention to the good news about surviving cancer.

“This annual event lifts the spirits of all who attend. They have survived their ordeal against cancer, and all profoundly appreciate the value of every day of life,” says Harold Dean, LCSW, coordinator of local Cancer Survivors Day activities for ACRC patients, families, and friends.

This year’s event marks the ninth year ACRC has celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day.  Plans for the event include special music and a panel presentation by Arkansas cancer survivors with a time for questions and sharing from the audience

“A cancer survivor is defined as anyone living with a history of cancer – from the time of diagnosis through the remainder of life,” says James Y. Suen, M.D., Director of the ACRC.  An estimated 8.9 million Americans are now living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer.  One in two men and one in three women can expect to hear a doctor say “the C word” at some point in their lives through the sentence, “You have cancer.”  Many forms of cancer can be prevented and most cured if detected early, so learning as much as possible about this disease – the sooner the better – is the best and most economical defensive strategy.

Major advances in cancer prevention, improved techniques for early detection, and new treatments based on medical research have produced longer survival times.  However, many cancer survivors also face a host of problems, including: access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, denial of health and life insurance coverage, financial hardships because of the high cost of medicines and medical care, employment problems and strained personal relationships.  Yet even those who face many challenges live active, productive lives.

The ACRC is the first of four Centers of Excellence at UAMS, and its particular focus is on cancer research for improved diagnosis and treatment.  ACRC offers services to cancer patients as one of the clinical programs of UAMS Medical Center. The educational program of ACRC provides medical school and residency training in medical oncology and oncological surgery for physicians of the UAMS College of Medicine, oncology nursing education for undergraduate and graduate-level nurses of the UAMS College of Nursing, and programs for other health-care providers.  For more information regarding this event, call the ACRC Social Work Department at 501-686-8145.
