Doyle and Raye Rogers Family Gives $4 Million for Expansion
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has announced a gift of $4 million from Doyle and Josephine Raye Rogers of Batesville; their daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Hoover; and their son and daughter-in-law, Doyle “Rog” and Carolyn Rogers, all of Little Rock.
A total of $3 million from the gift will fund construction of the lobby in the UAMS Medical Center’s expansion scheduled to open in 2008. The lobby will be named The Josephine Raye and Doyle W. Rogers Lobby and will incorporate materials native to Arkansas in its design and will be deemed the “Gateway to Healing.”
The remaining $1 million will benefit the expansion of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) at UAMS.
“Doyle and I and our family are proud to be a part of the new hospital at UAMS and also the expansion of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center,” Raye Rogers said. “UAMS is an outstanding medical facility that treats patients not only from Arkansas, but throughout the world because of unique programs like those at the ACRC.
“UAMS is a state treasure. It is about much more than delivering world-class health care today. It’s about training tomorrow’s nurses, doctors and scientists and ensuring that Arkansans have access to the latest, most cutting-edge treatments.”
“The Rogers family has a rich history with UAMS and with the state of Arkansas,” said UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D. “Mr. and Mrs. Rogers and their children exemplify the spirit of volunteer service and dedication to the future of health care research and treatment in our state. We are honored that they have chosen to partner with UAMS.”

UAMS BioVentures, Researcher Ink Deal With Rx Company
A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) researcher, working through UAMS BioVentures, has licensed the rights to a bacterial strain that may lead to a vaccine for certain antibiotic resistant bacterial infections.
UAMS BioVentures announced today that it has entered into an exclusive license agreement with sanofi pasteur, the vaccines business of sanofi-aventis group, related to the development of bacterial vaccines.
Chia Lee, Ph.D., a professor in the UAMS Department of Microbiology and Immunology, invented the bacterial strain subject to the agreement with sanofi pasteur. Thanh Luong, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the same department is co-inventor.
The agreement provides sanofi pasteur rights to the bacterial strain for the development of vaccines. While specific terms remain confidential, the agreement provides UAMS an upfront payment, and milestone payments related to product development and sales.
“We have manipulated the genes of the bacteria to mass-produce enough material so that sanofi pasteur can work on the development of a vaccine,” Lee said
UAMS BioVentures assisted Lee with the licensing agreement and to get a patent pending on the bacterial strain.
