Surgery Benefits Unruptured Brain Aneurysms
Surgery is a successful treatment for unruptured intracranial aneurysms, according to a study by University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) neurosurgeon Ali F. Krisht, M.D.
A brain aneurysm is a bulge or blister in the wall of a brain blood vessel. Left untreated, brain aneurysms may tear or rupture, which causes bleeding within the brain cavity and may result in permanent disability or death.
“This study is a turning point on how we will treat aneurysms in the future,” said Krisht, professor in the Department of Neurosurgery in the UAMS College of Medicine and director of the UAMS Neuroendocrine Clinic and Cerebrovascular Clinic. UAMS’ cerebrovascular center receives patient referrals from throughout the world and is widely recognized for its use of advanced surgical techniques.
Krisht published the results of his study titled “Outcome of Surgical Clipping of Unruptured Aneurysms as it Compares with a 10-Year Nonclipping Survival Period” in the February issue of Neurosurgery.
“There has long been a question about how effective surgery is in treating unruptured aneurysms,” Krisht said. “In this study, we analyzed the outcome of surgically treating patients with unruptured aneurysms and compared our results with the 10-year survival rate of patients in two previously published studies.”

AHEC-Pine Bluff Celebrates $1 Million Expansion
The remarkable legacy of the late Donald Miller, M.D., grew a bit more recently with a $1 million addition to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in Pine Bluff dedicated in his honor.
About 100 people gathered for the June 30 celebration, many of them friends, family and former colleagues of Miller.
Miller was AHEC-Pine Bluff’s first director, beginning in 1973, and during his 22 years there he showed the state how an AHEC could expand and improve training for family practice residents and other health care professionals.
“The Pine Bluff AHEC was really the template for all the AHECs in the state,” said UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D. “The AHEC’s success was aided by the strong relationship that Dr. Miller formed with Jefferson Regional Medical Center.”
The more than 8,000-square-foot expansion was built by Jefferson Regional Medical Center to meet the growing needs of UAMS AHEC-Pine Bluff, which is leasing the space on the JRMC campus.
