Small Groups

Several times each semester (about once a month), you will meet in small groups to discuss topics related to patient care. These sessions will supplement ICM lectures and your basic science course work. Each small group session will be facilitated by clinical faculty who will guide you through several clinical case scenarios that are related to the topic of discussion.

To check your small group assignment, contact the office.

Because hands-on practice is necessary to learn these skills, attendance at small group sessions is required and will be recorded. If you must miss a session, you must notify the course director or the ICM office BEFORE the session begins. Failure to provide prior notice will result in an unexcused absence.

Any UNEXCUSED absence from a required small group session will result in a loss of 25 points deducted from your course grade. A second unexcused absence during the year will result in automatic FAILURE of the course.

Preceptors will evaluate student performance in small group activities and will assign a "pass" or "fail" grade at the end of each semester. Students will receive a copy of this evaluation. Students must receive a passing small group evaluation at the end of the academic year to pass the course. To review the evaluation form, click here.
