Requirements for completion of the M.S. and Ph.D. programs
Requirements for completion of the M.S. program
Students in the MS program will take the
common core curriculum and track specific
electives determined by individual tracks within the IBS graduate program and
the student's Advisory Committee. A minimum of 36 semester credit hours and a
minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.85 on all graduate courses are
required. In addition, the Non-Thesis Option requires that students pass a
comprehensive examination. The Thesis Option requires 30 semester credit hours
of coursework plus a minimum of 6 credit hours of Research (IBSD 501V), the
submission of a thesis and a successful thesis defense. It is expected that
completion of these requirements will take from 2 to 2.5 years.
Requirements for completion of the Ph.D. program
Students in the PhD program will take the
common core curriculum and track specific
electives determined by individual tracks within the IBS graduate program and
the student's Advisory Committee. A minimum of 24 semester credit hours of
formal didactic course work and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.85
on all graduate courses are required. Students must pass the PhD Candidacy Exam
which is usually administered after two years of graduate study. Subsequently,
PhD Candidates must complete a minimum of 18 semester credit hours of Doctoral
Dissertation research (IBSD 700V). To complete the requirements of the PhD
program candidates will conduct scholarly research under the guidance of their
Advisor and Doctoral Advisory Committee, submit a written doctoral dissertation,
and successfully defend the research in a public forum. It is expected that
completion of these requirements will take from 4 to 5 years.
