Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (IBS)
The Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (IBS)
Graduate Program offers graduate training leading towards a
Masters of
Science (MS) or
Doctorate of
Philosophy (PhD) in IBS. The graduate programs are designed to provide
flexibility−a feature both students and graduate faculties appreciate. Graduate
students take the Basic Sciences Core
Curriculum during their first year.
PhD students also take IBS Research, spending 8
to 10 weeks in three different laboratories they are interested in. This gives
them an introduction to some of the available research areas on campus. In
addition, they get to know the faculty, staff, students and post-docs in the
lab, which greatly helps when deciding what laboratory to eventually go into. At
the beginning of the 2nd year PhD students select a mentor-advisor and enter the
lab. They also select to take specialized training in an Interdisciplinary Track
such as
Aging Biology,
Cancer Biology,
Cell Biology,
Cellular and Molecular Immunology & Immunopathology,
Infectious Disease & Pathogenesis, and
Interdisciplinary Neuroscience. New Interdisciplinary Tracks are being
formed; check back at this website often to find out more. While the Basic
Sciences Core Curriculum provides core knowledge for all disciplines, additional
electives selected by the student and their Advisory Committee, or required by
the individual Interdisciplinary Tracks allows the development of a course of
study unique and individualized to each student. Under the
direction of their major advisor, PhD students must pass a Candidacy Exam prior
to beginning their dissertation research. Students in the PhD Interdisciplinary
Biomedical Science Graduate Program receive a tuition and a stipend of
$24,000 (does not apply to students in the Clinical
and Translational Sciences Track). MS students can select the
Thesis or Non-thesis option. More information about the MS options can be found
here
A new track in Clinical and Translational Sciences
(CTS) is now available. The
application requirements and
curriculum are different from the rest of the IBS program. More
information about the CTS track can be found here.
There is also a graduate certificate
offered in Clinical and Translational Sciences.
