M2 Medical Ethics
The recognition that ethics is central to medical
practice has been part and parcel of the profession since its early Ancient
Greek roots. From the Hippocratic Oath to the concerns of Galen,
Paracelsus, John Gregory, and Thomas Percival, historically medical ethics
and the humane care of patients were not lost on early generations. But it
is since the 1960s and 70s that a focus on putting ethics and humanities
into medical school education began.
The UAMS College of Medicine’s course in medical
ethics has been taught continuously to every medical student since the fall
of 1983. The course strives to provide students with an opportunity to
confront squarely both personal and professional values in relationship to
medical care and clinical research.
