I do
not understand why our insurance plan continues to
rise in cost and at the same time our plan design
benefits are reduced. It doesn’t make sense why we
are paying more for health insurance and getting
less in return. Please explain.
Many employees do
not understand that QualChoice is only the
administrator of our health insurance plan. The UA
System’s health plan is self-insured. What does this
mean? What this essentially means is that we are in
control of our health design, but we are also
responsible for ensuring the financial stability of
our plan. In simple terms it is like we have a bank
account set up. The premiums are credited to this
account, and the claims are debited from this
account.
Last year, we had a
few catastrophic claims that depleted our reserves.
This threw up a red flag of alarm to the UA System.
The UA System in conjunction with the System Wide
Fringe Benefits Committee, consultants, the HR
Directors, and other advisors researched different
avenues to remedy the problem to ensure the
stability of our insurance plan. The end results was
that minor plan designs were made.
Unfortunately, the
problems with the rising costs of health insurance
are a national issue. Increased costs in
pharmaceuticals have been a major impact on health
insurance.
The UA System
Office continues to work towards cost containment
and improved plan design. Your suggestions and
opinions are encouraged.
What kind of
employee issues should be forwarded to the HOD
Fringe Benefits Committee?
Law mandates
the majority of the UAMS Fringe Benefits package.
That does not mean we are not allowed to forward
recommendations to Dr. Wilson for consideration
through the UA Systems
Office.
The Fringe Benefits
is also interested in internal benefits for our
staff. We have implemented the Employee Relief Fund,
schedule nights at Ray Winder Field, sponsored the
sale of the Entertainment Book, discounts tickets to
Magic Springs, and a few years ago sponsored a trip
of staff to Tunica and a trip to Las Vegas.
All recommendations
are encouraged. If you have any suggestions, please
forward them to our committee. We meet the second
Tuesday of each month at noon. Guests are welcome.
PARKING
What do I do and where
do I park if I am driving a vehicle that does not
have a decal?
You can park
where you normally do, but each day, you must
immediately call Campus Police at 686-7777, and let
them know the license number, vehicle description
and where you are parked. If you will be driving the
unregistered vehicle for three days or more, you
must obtain a temporary parking permit from Campus
Police Traffic Office. The hours are 7:30AM - 4PM,
Monday through Friday.
Where do I park if I am visiting
a patient or if I am a patient myself?
Ideally you
should park in your assigned area. If that is not
possible and you need to park on A-level or in
clinic parking, you must immediately call Campus
Police at 686-7777 and give them the license number,
vehicle description and where you are parked.
