Expansion News |
|
The Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at UAMS is one of only 20 free-standing vision research institutes in the nation. The expansion to double its size through construction of five new floors provided much-needed space for our clinical, education and research activities.
When the Jones Eye Institute opened in 1994, its mission was to reduce blindness and impaired vision in Arkansas through quality patient care, education and research. Our continued success in fulfilling this mission means we must have the resources to provide the best eye care to our patients, educate doctors and technicians to become skilled ophthalmic practitioners and foster sight-saving research. This expansion project ensures we have the needed space.
The new addition was named the Pat Walker Tower. Mrs. Walker has carried on the tradition of philanthropy she started with her husband, the late Willard J. Walker. We are grateful for this gift as well as for her previous support which has helped to fund the Pat & Willard Walker Eye Research Center at Jones Eye Institute.

Project description
 |
Construction of the $12 million, five-floor addition to the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute began in November 2004 and was opened in early 2006.
The 50,000-square-foot expansion doubled the size of the facility. The expansion provides additional clinic, research and office space, as well as more room for the Arkansas Lions Eye Bank, the state’s only eye bank. A larger library, additional classroom space for the ophthalmic medical technology program and room for future growth are also included in the expansion.
Some remodeling of existing space also was completed during construction, including the optical shop in the clinic and the addition of two operating rooms.
