The expansion effort at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will stretch over the next several years and encompass a series of expansion and renovation projects. It includes additional space and facilities for meeting the UAMS missions of patient care, education, research and community outreach for many years to come.

The largest project will be a significant expansion of the UAMS Medical Center, which will include new patient rooms and space for other programs and services.

Here are the various completed, under way or future projects:

Hospital – A 10-level, 540,000-square-foot hospital expansion will include 234 adult beds and 60 neonatal beds initially, with space for growth that would bring the total capacity to 393 private adult patient rooms between the new facility and the hospital’s existing Ward Tower. It’s scheduled to open in late 2008.

Psychiatric Research Institute – A five-floor, 100,000-square-foot facility will include space for inpatient and outpatient treatment, education, research and administration. It will consolidate a department scattered over several locations, serving about 8,700 patients monthly. It’s scheduled to open in 2008.

Arkansas Cancer Research Center Expansion – A planned 288,000-square-foot expansion will add more space for patient care, research and education programs. Construction is expected to start in 2007 just north of the existing building.

Residence Hall – The $14.6 million, 92,000-square-foot, 177-unit facility opened to UAMS students in August 2006 with a mix of traditional dormitory-style rooms with semi-private baths, one-bedroom apartments and studio apartments. It replaces the old Student Dormitory that was imploded in 2006 to make room for the hospital expansion.

Jones Eye Institute Expansion – A $12 million, five-floor, 56,000-square-foot addition opened in April 2006 allowing for the expansion of existing clinical, research and education programs and room to develop new services. It is named the Pat Walker Tower for the Springdale philanthropist whose gift made the project possible.

West Central Energy Plant – Located on Seventh Street, this new facility will provide utility services to the west side of the UAMS campus and portions of the Arkansas State Hospital. Completion is expected in 2007.

Site Development/Hooper Drive – Access to the hospital and UAMS campus is being improved with the conversion of Hooper Drive to a four-lane, divided boulevard. Additional work also will be done on Shuffield Drive to improve campus access for patients and visitors.

Education Building – The planned two-story building of approximately 43,000-square-feet is expected to include 14 25-seat classrooms, two 40-seat classrooms and two 232-seat auditoriums. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in summer 2007.

UAMS Bookstore – A new, larger bookstore opened in 2006 to replace the bookstore located in the old student union that was torn down.  The $700,000 bookstore is 4,000 square feet.

State Hospital – UAMS supplied much of the funding for a 148,000-square-foot state hospital facility on its campus next to UAMS. In return, the state hospital provided the land where the new UAMS Residence Hall is located. In addition, some existing state hospital buildings will transfer to UAMS when construction of the new state hospital is complete in early 2008. Those buildings will be renovated to house the UAMS College of Health Related Professions, which is currently spread over several on and off-campus locations.
