Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

Dr. Peter Emanuel
Dr. Peter D. Emanuel, M.D.
Executive Director
Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

Since it was founded in 1984 as the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, the newly renamed Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute has developed a reputation for quality patient care, education, research and community outreach. Our programs have attracted patients from all over Arkansas, across the country and around the world.

We’ve outgrown our current facility at a time when cancer rates continue to climb. The baby boomer generation is reaching retirement age and all indications are this will cause the number of cancer cases to keep increasing in the coming years – translating to even more demand for treatment, education and outreach services. At the heart of the cancer institute continues to be our research mission, which needs more space to intensify our ongoing search for cancer causes and new cancer treatments.

This expansion will allow us to care for more patients, expand our research efforts and maintain our education and cancer prevention programs. Our focus remains on how to best serve our patients and we are excited at this opportunity to expand the cancer institute to meet our needs in the future.

Project description

Work on a more than 300,000-square-foot expansion to the cancer institute is now under way. The expansion will add more space for clinical, research, education and community outreach programs.

Architecture firms Cromwell Architects Engineers Inc. of Little Rock and FKP Architects of Houston were selected for the project. Cromwell, which won a design award for its work on the Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute building at UAMS, is working with cancer institute staff on designs for the expansion. FKP has been involved in more than 600 health care projects, including design work on the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
