University Hospital – also known as UAMS Medical Center – opened with 528 beds. It remains a place where people come for treatment and students come to learn.
As other buildings came on campus, University Hospital became the hub that connected all buildings. But with age and new advances in health care, rooms built for up to five beds became single or double rooms. Floor to ceiling height could no longer support the requirements for critical care and by 2005 it was cheaper to build new rather than make the renovations required to maintain long-term patient care.
The original hospital encompasses 588,254 square feet.
