Site work is under way for the nearly 300,000-square-foot expansion to the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
In February, utility lines adjacent to the existing Cancer Institute building were relocated. This followed removal of two portable buildings at the site. Also torn down was the canopy over the Cancer Institute’s closed north entrance.
While utility relocation continued, drilling also started for the concrete piers that will support the 12-story expansion. The pier depths vary, as drilling continued until they hit solid rock. Some are as deep as 40 feet.
With the concrete foundation and support in place, workers will begin setting up the steel beams that will serve as the building’s skeleton.
