Application and Admission
The
deadline for application materials is January 15 each calendar year. Students
who submit application materials for the January deadline will be considered for
admission to the program in August of that same calendar year. (e.g. Students
who submit application materials for the Jan. 2009 deadline, will be considered
for admission in Aug. 2009). New students are admitted to the program only
during the fall term (August) of each academic year.

MS or equivalent degree in a health-related field.
At least one graduate-level course in each of four key areas: a)
health behavior & education; b) biostatistics; c) epidemiology; d) research
design.
A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.70 or better on all undergraduate
and graduate coursework previously attempted (A = 4.00).
Academic records from each college or university previously
attended. Courses must have been completed within the 5 years immediately
preceding the requested semester of admission. Two copies of official
transcripts must be submitted directly to the Graduate School.
Graduate record exam taken
within 5 years immediately preceding the requested semester of admission with a
minimum combined score of 1200. Official scores must be submitted directly to
the Graduate School.
A master’s thesis or
written report demonstrating a comparable level of research experience and
expertise that has been prepared in a manner consistent with publication in a
peer-reviewed journal.
The thesis or research
report will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee to evaluate the relevance
and quality of the applicant’s research experience.
The review will
specifically consider: relevance and adequacy of literature review; significance
and specificity of a well defined hypothesis or research question; appropriate
and effective application of experimental methods; selection and description of
appropriate intervention and assessment methods; description and application of
an appropriate data analysis plan; presentation and interpretation of results;
discussion and integration of results within the public health literature.

Four (4) letters of
recommendation.
Additional
requirements for Admission of International Applicants
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all international
applicants whose native language is not English and who do not have a bachelor’s
or master’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. The test must
be taken within the two years immediately preceding the requested semester of
admission. Paper-base written test minimum score is 550. Computer-based test
minimum score is 213.
Applicants who are in the U.S. in a non-resident alien status must have
documentation of an appropriate status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS).
