Ioana Peret, College of Medicine freshman
Ioana Peret has won numerous scholarships and awards for academic achievement.
She hopes to practice medicine someday in disadvantaged communities. “Becoming
a doctor is the best way for me to have positive impact on the underprivileged,” she
says. “My parents also encouraged me to go into medicine. My father saw

Tiffany Shelton wonders what it must have been like for Dorothy Reese Pelko,
who dreamed of going to medical school more than half a century ago but couldn’t
afford it. The College of Medicine freshman is truly inspired by philanthropists
like Pelko, who died in 2002 and made a generous contribution to UAMS for scholarships
