Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I have a tour of the fitness center? I would like to see it before I join.
A: Yes, drop in anytime between 7:00am and 6:00pm for a tour.


Q: When will my payroll deduction begin?
A: Depending on when you sign up, payroll deduction begins the next pay period.

Q: Can I sign-up my girlfriend/boyfriend?
A: Each UAMS Fitness Center member is allowed to sign-up one additional person as long as they are over the age of 18. Please understand that your fee will double. Spouse/companion will need to obtain a from the fitness center.  There will be a fee of $5.00.

Q: Can I teach an aerobics or yoga class?

A: Classes are being taught by both UAMS employees and outside instructors. If interested, please e-mail your resume to russell@uams.edu or mail to Get Healthy UAMS, 4301 West Markham #838, Little Rock, AR 72205-7199.

Q: Can someone advise me on an exercise plan to reach my goals?
A: The fitness center staff will be happy to help all members reach their goals through an individualized workout plan. In addition, a list of personal trainers will be available to help you with a more structured and monitored exercise plan. The cost of these services has been capped at $25 an hour.  Your can also go to the workout page on our website http://www.uams.edu/gethealthy/Workout_Programs/Workout_programs.asp .

Q: I work at UAMS, but am paid by another company. Can I still join?
A: Yes, instead of being payroll deducted you will have a monthly direct debit from your checking or savings account.

Q: Are there group fitness classes?
A: Schedules are available in the Fitness Center or online.

Q: Are towels provided?

A: Yes, free towels are available. In addition, mounted hair dryers are installed in each locker room. You should plan to bring all other personal grooming items.

Q: Can I have my own locker?
A: At this time the free lockers will be available for daily use only. If desired, you will need to bring a combination lock to secure your personal items. When you leave, the locker must be available for use by other members. Note: Rental lockers are available through the College of Public Health Student Council.

Q: What cardiovascular equipment is available?
A: There will be eight treadmills, five elliptical trainers, three recumbent bikes, two upright bikes, and two stair climbers. All cardiovascular equipment is outfitted with heart rate monitor handles.

Q: What types of weight training equipment is available?
A: A complete line of Paramount fitness equipment is available including leg extension/leg curl, lat pull down/seated row, glute press, leg press, biceps/triceps, shoulder/rear deltoid, inner/outer thigh, back/abdominal, and pec fly/chest press.

Q: I like to use free weights. Does the Fitness Center have a free weight area?
A: You can use both barbells and dumbbells. The barbells are a fixed design available from 20 to 110 lbs. There is also a Smith machine, and decline and incline benches. The group exercise room is now card accessible for an additional free weight and stretch area.
