CRC Core Laboratories

The CRC Core Laboratories are available to support approved CRC protocols.  Protocols that only require the core laboratories may be considered by the SAC.  Please contact Subramanian Ranganathan, PhD, or Cindy Henrich, MS, for questions on how to use these core laboratories.  Please contact Dr. Ranganathan for specialized support of existing or contemplated CRC projects that are not covered by these core laboratories.   The lab personnel meet with investigators during the implementation meeting to specify how the samples are to be processed and what tests are to be carried out.

The Core Laboratories are comprised of two functioning labs.  They offer customized specimen processing services including:

  • Set up blood collection tubes for OGT, IVGT and other procedures

  • Centrifugation to separate serum or plasma for storage and analysis

  • Isolation of different cell types from whole blood

  • Isolation of DNA from whole blood or leukocytes

  • Glucose measurement using YSI glucose analyzer

  • Short term storage of specimens at -20o or -80o C

  • Preparation for sending specimens to LabCorp for various tests such as Hepatic function test, Glucose, Electrolyte, HbA1c,  Lipid panel, Metabolic panes, and Creatinine.

Additionally, the CRC Core Lab offers various assays for the investigators. We can assay several hormones, peptides and other blood components using commercially available ELISA kits. The lab employs state of the art immuno-chemiluminometric techniques for the assay of insulin, C-peptide and proinsulin.  We also offer measurement of deuterium oxide for the assessment of total body water.

The Core Lab assists the investigator in the mounting and freezing of human muscle tissue obtained by the biopsy technique.

The Core Lab Director must approve specialty procedures prior to submission of the CRC application.   If you would like more information or you feel that we might be of service to you, please contact Dr. Subramanian Ranganathan, CRC Core Lab Manager, at 501-526-4679.  The Lab staff can be reached at 501-526-7784.
