Introduction

We are delighted at your inquiry regarding the Gastroenterology Training Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  If you are interested in our program, please complete the online application on this website and return as soon as possible.  Do not send references at this time.  We will contact you when we need the references.  Let me give you a brief overview of GI training at UAMS.

We offer a 3-year fellowship in Gastroenterology/Hepatology. The clinical program is conducted at two adjacent hospitals connected by a bridge: University Hospital and the John L. McClellan Veterans Hospital. These institutions, with a total of nearly 1000 beds provide a fascinating array of clinical material.  Referrals come from throughout Arkansas and nearby states.  Our primary focus is the training of a complete clinical gastroenterologist.  Although we recognize the importance of endoscopic procedures, in this program we stress the cognitive aspects of gastroenterology.  This includes an emphasis on the following:

  • Teaching Rounds
  • Journal Club
  • GI/Liver Curriculum Conference
  • Clinical Research Conference
  • GI/Liver Pathology Conference
  • Chief-Of-Service Rounds
  • Physiology Seminars
  • Joint GI/Surgery/Radiology/Oncology Conference

Graduates of our program perform many more procedures than endoscopic societies require for minimal competence.  As a University Medical Center, we are involved in the most innovative aspects of gastrointestinal procedures, including advanced therapeutic biliary and pancreatic duct endoscopy, 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring, endoscopic ultrasonograpy, laser therapy, gastric pacing, a GI Motility Laboratory, and others.

Overall, the Gastroenterology Fellowship at UAMS provides excellent training in an environment that is highly productive and tremendous fun for our fellows and faculty.  Moreover, Little Rock is a lovely community with excellent gastronomical, cultural, and sports opportunities.  I look forward to receiving your application.

Sincerely,

Kevin W. Olden, MD
