Emergency
Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is a full
academic department within the College of Medicine. The fully accredited
residency program was established in 1983 and it is fully staffed by board
certified/board eligible emergency medicine faculty. Residents train in the
University Hospital Emergency Department, Arkansas Children's Hospital,
Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, and the Baptist Medical Center.

Emergency Department
is a state of the art facility that handles more than 32,000 visits
per year with a 19% admission rate. It houses 25 beds for major and
minor trauma, major medicine, a decontamination suite, an orthopedic
suite, and a minor surgery suite. The Emergency Department provides
full-service on a 24-hour basis with in-house faculty in attendance
at all
times, and it
is JCAHO level I accredited. The Department is capable
of managing medical, trauma, neurological, surgical, and obstetrical

Children's Hospital
houses the busiest Emergency Department in the state with over
60,000 annual patient visits, and is the only Arkansas hospital
devoted entirely to the care of children. It is staffed by
Board-Certified pediatricians on a 24 hour basis.
It is the primary site for the pediatric, PICU and emergency
transport rotations in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The
second and third year residents have continuous pediatric emergency
medicine experience in the ACH ER throughout their remaining stay in
the program. As interns the residents rotate on the Pediatric wards
at ACH. As second years they rotate through the PICU at ACH.
Third year residents will also do a transport rotation with Angel
Flight, the pediatric transport service which serves Arkansas and
surrounding areas.

John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital
is conveniently
located next to the UAMS campus. Residents participate in a variety of
rotational experiences including internal medicine and adult
critical care.

is part of
Arkansas's largest health provision
system, Baptist
Health. First year residents will participate in prehospital care
with MEMS and BMC, as well as doing a rotation in private practice
emergency medicine at BMC.

Medical Services
is the state of the art Emergency Medical Service provider for Little
Rock, Pulaski County, Grant County,
and the cities of Lonoke, Maumelle, and Sheridan. First year
residents will do a month of EMS with MEMS during which they will have
an opportunity to function as part of the EMS crew and learn the
interworkings of emergency medical services.
