Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  Our program provides training in postgraduate years 1-3 (PGY 1-3).  Graduates of our program become qualified to take the Board Examination in Emergency Medicine.  Our program participates in NRMP Match.  D.O. graduates: please be aware that UAMS does not accept Comlex scores  - please take USMLE.

Although the Emergency Medicine Program is highly competitive, we do not have any set minimum requirements for scores for American-trained candidates.  If you are currently in the first year of a 4-year residency you may apply for an intern position.  All aspects of the application are considered when granting interviews, but only completed applications are reviewed. A completed application includes all of the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Common Application Form
  • Medical School Transcript(s)
  • Dean's Letter
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • USMLE Step 1 Score*
  • Photograph

*Please note that USMLE Step II must be completed by mid-February in order for a candidate to be ranked.

Applications for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will not accept mailed, faxed, or e-mailed applications (but our trashcan will). The contact numbers for ERAS is as follows:

  • For U.S. Grads: Contact your designated Dean's Office
  • For International Medical Graduates: Contact the ECFMG at (215) 386-5900
  • For Canadian Graduates: Contact CARMS at (613) 237-0075

We will accept applications only for the eight PGY-1 positions.  We begin downloading applications in mid-September and begin offering interviews in late-October through December.  The deadline for completing your application through ERAS is November 30.  During the interview applicants will:

  • Learn first-hand about the details and philosophy of our program
  • Meet our faculty and residents and tour our Emergency Department facilities
  • Join the Residents' didactics conference

After the completion of all interviews for a given year, the Chairman and Program Director prepare a rank order list and submit it to the NRMP in accordance with their stated policies. Information about an applicant's standing is not made available before "Match Day".

International Medical Graduates should be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Graduation from medical school not more than 2 years ago.
  • No failing scores on Part I and Part II of USMLE.
  • Some clinical experience in the United States which can be evaluated by faculty preceptors.  This experience must include having responsibility for patient care and follow-up.  Volunteer activities, observership, and research will not satisfy this requirement.  (for this reason UAMS does not allow IMGs to serve on an observership or clerkship)
  • A non-expired Visa (J1 or H1-b) obtained prior to residency and valid for the three years of your residency..
  • Ministry of Health Letter -  The Ministry of Health Letter must be prepared on the official letterhead of the Ministry of Health, must bear the seal of that government, and be signed by the duly designated official.  The letter should state that the candidate's medical school is fully approved and accredited.  It should also state whether a candidate from that school would have a position available to him/her on their return to their country of origin.  It should also state whether the candidate would have the support of the ministry should they require a visa.

These requirements are in place simply to assure that anyone entering this residency program has the background and ability to successfully complete his or her training.

If you are currently a student in an American-based medical school and would like information on rotating through the UAMS Emergency Department, please contact:
