Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the UAMS Junk Mail System?
The UAMS Junk Mail system is an anti-spam system that is on the campus mail server. It intercepts email as it enters the server and blocks it according to preset rules, i.e. Spam, Likely Spam, Fraud, Virus. You have the ability to change these rules or opt out of having your junk mail blocked altogether. This system works in addition to your Outlook Junk Mail filter.
Everyone is protected by the junk mail system, but you do have the option to turn off this protection.
3. How do I opt out of (turn off) junk mail filtering for my mailbox?
4. My friend's e-mail keeps getting blocked. What can I do to make sure that mail gets through to me? Will I get false positive?
When you "unjunk" messages in the Junk Mail summary, the sender of the message will automatically be added to your Allowed lists. (white list)
You may also add that person to your "Allowed" persons list manually. After logging in click Anti-Spam Techniques. Click "People" on the left hand side of the screen. You can allow or block e-mail addresses. These same directions apply for both "Companies and Lists".
5. Can I change settings from off campus?
You may change all of your settings off-campus by going to the web page: http://junkmail.uams.edu.
6. How do I strengthen/weaken my rules for blocking Junk Mail?
You may control the system's Junk Mail aggressiveness on your email. Login to the the system at http://junkmail.uams.edu "Anti-Spam Techniques”, then click “Rules and Collaborative”.
7. Can I send mail that should have been blocked (Bad Mail) or mail that should not have been blocked (Good Mail) to the system so that it can be updated?
Yes. If you get mail that should have been blocked, you may send it to "Junk - Bad Mail" from the Outlook global list. You may also send mail that should not have been blocked to "Junk - Good Mail" from the global list.
The system will analyze your Junk Mail submissions and will update the Junk Mail filtering engine accordingly. This system will NOT block an email based on one email submission. There must be multiple submissions of the same email before it will be considered for addition to the Junk Mail filter.
