UAMS Medical Center Externship Program
We are delighted that you are interested in exploring an option to participate in our Externship Program! This program is designed specifically for students who plan to work at UAMS Medical Center upon graduation. This eight (8) week period during the summer is for nursing students who have completed a Foundations Course and 1 (one) clinical rotation within the Jr. year. If student desires to work more than 8 weeks, extensions can be requested. Each student will be assigned into a non-benefit position and required to work the same schedule as the assigned preceptor. Schedules are either a 12 hour day or night shift with rotation to the weekend or Weekend Option shifts (A/P). Students are also required to attend a bi-weekly (2) two hour seminar facilitated by Staff Education. Seminars focus on Case Study presentations and “Hot” topic discussions. A two (2) credit hour course, Nsg. 4042: Special Topics, is available to students who desire to pay tuition. To apply, contact Dr. Pat E. Thompson, Associate Dean, UAMS College of Nursing, at 501-686-5374. Salary is $10.25/hr. with an additional 20% for E/N/P shifts, and 10% for any shift Saturday/Sunday. To requests housing, see the UAMS Student Activities and Housing for rates/availability. A $300 monthly allowance will be provided toward student housing for out of town students only. Also contact Public Safety at 501-526-7275 for campus parking information and monthly rates for students. Twenty-two (22) students will be chosen to participate. Selected students will be required to purchase a “designated” uniform, expected to adhere to UAMS Medical Center's policies and standards, and commit to no absences or tardiness.
