Internal Medicine Residency Program
A Note from the Chairman
James D. Marsh, M.D.
Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program for the College of Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Over the past 125 years, our Department has developed a strong tradition of excellence in patient care, education of residents and medical students, and innovative research. The residency program has its clinical base both at the University Hospital and the adjacent Central Arkansas Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Our trainees, under the daily supervision of outstanding faculty members, provide medical care to a large number of patients from diverse backgrounds. During the residency training period, our trainees participate in the diagnosis and care of inpatients and outpatients who come from our surrounding community, and patients who are referred from around the state, country, and world.
The Internal Medicine Residency Program is demanding, challenging, and immensely rewarding. Under the guidance of the 100 faculty members in the Department of Internal Medicine, trainees learn to apply the science fundamental to medicine to the diagnosis and care of the patient, learn the art of understanding and caring for and about and patient, learn that fellow residents are your best resource for learning and your best friend, and never forget the quality of mercy in the care of the person with an illness.
UAMS is adding a new hospital building as well as several other facilities to our campus. Our campus is among the most “wired” (and soon wireless) in the country, with extensive electronic infrastructure and resources in the hospitals and clinics. It is our goal to train internists and internal medicine subspecialists who will be the leading physicians in their community or academic center after they leave our program. We train outstanding doctors for adults for the 21st century.
