General Internal Medicine

Susan S. Beland, MD, FACP
Associate Professor & Director

Clinical Programs and Facilities
The Division oversees the educational program in the Internal Medicine Clinic. Medicine house staff see their patients in this modern facility through a weekly Continuity Clinic and month- long Ambulatory Care Clinic rotations. Patient schedules are computerized, house staff notes are dictated, and a full complement of nurses, social workers, and clerical personnel are available to assist in the delivery of outpatient care. The University Private Medical Group is a facility where faculty see their private patients.

Primary Care Elective: Senior and Junior medical students rotate through the General Internal Medicine Clinic and work alongside house staff in the provision of outpatient care to adults.

Perioperative Consultative Service: The Division is nationally known for its expertise in perioperative care. Senior residents can spend one month on the service and learn concepts of perioperative physiology, perioperative risk assessment, and the management of postoperative complications.

Research Programs and Facilities
Divisional faculty have interests in several areas. The faculty has funding to perform clinical outcomes assessment and quality improvement projects using a statewide Medicare database. Several funded programs in practice guidelines were recently completed. There is a funded program in practice guideline dissemination and quality assurance. Ongoing projects in perioperative care and the treatment and prevention of deep venous thrombosis dominate the clinical research activities.
