Clinical Programs and Facilities
The outpatient Rheumatology Clinic, located in the Ambulatory Care Center at University Hospital and the VA Hospital, provides service to a large cross-section of patients with arthritic and collagen vascular diseases. Clinics are currently held at the University Hospital three days a week and at the VA Hospital four days a week. Patients from the entire state are seen in these clinics on a referral basis. Patients are seen and evaluated, the diagnosis is made, therapy is begun, and the patient is referred back to his physician. In addition, the clinic provides telephone consultative help to local physicians in caring for their patients with arthritic and collagen vascular diseases. Our clinics care for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other collagen vascular diseases, as well as crystal-induced arthritis, and degenerative joint disease.

Both the University Clinic and the VA Clinic have access to CT scanning, MRI, and a complete battery of immunologic tests for the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and collagen vascular disease.

The Rheumatology clinics work in close collaboration with Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Therapy. The facilities of the Arkansas Rehabilitation Institute are available to the patients.

Research Programs and Facilities
Research activities of the Division involve clinical and basic investigation on several aspects of the rheumatic diseases. These include studies on cell-mediated immunity, immune mechanisms of cartilage damage in inflammatory arthritis, and immunoregulatory and pathogenic effects of autoantibodies. The division has extensive laboratory facilities to support the research activities of an expanding, academically oriented group of rheumatologists.

Fellowships
Three fellowship positions are available, preferably for physicians interested in three years of post-doctoral training both in the clinical and basic areas of the rheumatic diseases. The training programs are flexible and can be tailored according to the individual interests of the trainees. In general, the academically-oriented fellow, particularly individuals in the Clinical Investigator Pathway, will devote about 75 percent of his/her time to research activities and 25 percent to patient care.
