Dr. Owen is a nationally-recognized expert in research on the quality and outcomes of care for schizophrenia, and on the implementation of evidence-based practices into routine clinical practice.  Currently Dr. Owen is conducting A Study of Strategies to Improve Schizophrenia Treatment, which focuses on improving antipsychotic treatment and side effect monitoring.  He is also collaborating with researchers and VHA leaders on efforts to disseminate depression care management.  Dr. Owen's other research includes a project with Teresa Hudson, PharmD and others to enhance existing performance measures for metabolic side effect monitoring; determine the costs and cost-effectiveness of metabolic monitoring in VISN 16; and develop and implement recommendations for side effect management.  Another of his current projects aims to identify barriers and facilitators to initial implementation of psychosocial rehabilitation programs funded as part of the VHA Mental Health Strategic Plans initiatives.  Dr. Owen serves as the Research Coordinator for the Mental Health Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (MH QUERI) and the Center PI for the Research Enhancement Award Program (REACH).
