1.The
Family Medicine Inpatient Service (FMIS) will accept any and all admissions
of. Family Medical Center (FMC) or Primary Care Center (PCC) patients
2.
The FMIS will participate in the unassigned call schedule at
University Hospital.
3. The following criteria will be used for inpatient unassigned admission from the ED to FMIS:
A. Any patient who has identified him/herself as an
Internal Medicine patient or Medicine subspecialty patient will be admitted to
Internal Medicine.
B. Any unassigned patients requiring admission to an Intensive Care unit shall be admitted to Internal Medicine
C: General Guidelines for use of ED attending for
admission to FMIS:
1.) Financial considerations (i.e.: whether or not the patient has any form of insurance) will in no way be used to determine which service should admit the patient
2.) The FMIS will generally limit the number of unassigned patients it will accept from the ED for admission to one patient for each 24 hour period. This will be at the discretion of the FMIS ward chief and faculty attending. The ED attending may request further admissions during a 24 hr. period.
3.) The patient, ideally, should have a problem appropriate for admission to a general medical service. Patients will be selected by the ED attending physician. The FMIS ward chief will track the total number of admissions and will notify the ED when the FMIS is no longer accepting unassigned admissions.
4.) FMC & PCC patients will be evaluated by ED staff using routine ED protocols. The ED will notify the appropriate FMIS resident when admission is necessary.
4.
The FMIS will be closed to unassigned patients when a census
of 10 patients has been reached on the FMIS or at the discretion of FMIS
attending faculty.
5. FMIS may refuse to accept a patient on unassigned call who has been terminated from FMC or PCC clinics.
