Grading Policy

The final grade for the clerkship will be calculated using the following formula:

  1. Clinical Performance 60%

  2. Core Curriculum (4 subjects) 15%

  3. Evidence-Based Medicine Project 10%

  4. Shelf-Exam 15%

A. Clinical Performance

Clinical performance evaluations will be obtained from every clinical instructor (faculty M.D. or resident) who has had an adequate opportunity to work with the student in a significant capacity or in the clinic. The final clinical performance rating will be reached after averaging the individual performance component evaluators’ ratings. This may be shared with the student prior to leaving the clerkship site but shall not be linked to a separate letter grade. Clinical performance is a component of the final grade and constitutes 60%.

B. Core Curriculum

The Family Medicine Junior Clerkship has implemented a curriculum in four main areas 1) Type II Diabetes 2) Hypertension 3) Nutrition and 4) Medical Genetics. Additional emphasis will be placed on these subjects during the rotation. At the end of your rotation, you will be able to diagnose and perform initial and follow-up management of patients with Type II Diabetes and Hypertension; understand the role nutrition plays in coronary artery disease and obesity and be able to discuss the ethical, legal, and social issues concerning genetics in primary care.

A post clerkship test will be given on the last day of the rotation and will cover the required reading on diabetes, nutrition (physical activity), hypertension, and medical genetics. This includes the required reading from the online genetics module.

Included in the syllabus are the following:

c) Title/publication information to Real-World Approach to Insulin Therapy in Primary Care Practice article
d) Title/publication information to Health Benefits of Physical Activity article
e) Link to JNC-VII Prevention, Detection, Evaluation & Treatment of Hypertension article
f) Link to the Web CT website

You will be responsible for:

  • Completing the reading materials listed in the Syllabus. All articles can be found on the internet at the various publication's archive sites ad downloaded for printing.
  • Completing the online genetics module via WebCT
  • Completing the Nutrition Assessment booklet and discussing with your site director or their designee towards the end of your rotation
  • Completing a post-test covering the assigned reading on Diabetes, Hypertension, Nutrition, and Medical Genetics.  This will be given on the last day of the clerkship.

Students will have time blocked into their schedule to complete these activities.

Points earned for this module:

C. Evidence-Based Medicine Project - Total 10 points

The Family Medicine Junior Clerkship developed this project to teach students the skills of critical appraisal of the literature. You will work through the process of developing a clinical question, performing an on-line journal search, choosing a journal article, appraising the article, and presenting your findings to your site director and to your fellow students in a meeting on the last day of the rotation.
