Undergraduate Program
AHEC Northeast - Jonesboro
The Area Health Education Center at Jonesboro was
established in 1974. The Family Practice Clinic and AHEC offices are located
in the Diagnostic Treatment Center adjacent to the ANNEX buliding attached
to St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center.
Academic programs
at AHEC-Northeast include a family practice residency, opportunities for
senior medical students to assume intern-level responsibilities with active
participation in various aspects of patient care. Preceptorship rotations
for senior nursing and pharmacy students, and a rural preceptorship program
after pre-clinical training are also available.
AHEC-Northeast
offers continuing education for staff, students, residents and physicians on
a regular basis. The AHEC library maintains an extensive collection of
monographs, journals, pamphlets, reference books, and audiovisuals. Special
library services such as literature searches, current awareness searches,
computer-assisted research, and interlibrary loans are available to meet
individual needs.
Jonesboro is
located in northeast Arkansas in the midst of a large agricultural area. It
is one of the fastest growing commercial and industrial areas in the state,
with a population of approximately 50,000 and serving a trade area of over
300,000 people. Of major importance to Jonesboro is Arkansas State
University, the second largest institution of higher learning in the state,
with an enrollment of more than 7,000 students.
Recreation in
northeast Arkansas includes limitless outdoor opportunity in several state
parks and ample facilities for golf, tennis, swimming, fishing, hunting, and
white-water canoeing. There are many places to shop in and around
Jonesboro, and additional entertainment can be found in Memphis, Tennessee,
an hour’s drive to the south.
