Undergraduate Program
AHEC Northwest - Fayetteville
AHEC-Northwest was established in Fayetteville in 1975 with the objective
of developing a program that included all of the overall AHEC program goals,
with an emphasis on excellence. Our region consists of eleven counties in
Northwest Arkansas (Washington, Madison, Newton, Searcy, Benton, Carroll,
Boone, Marion, Baxter, Stone and Izard), with an estimated population of
350,000+. Dr. Joanna Thomas serves as the Family Medicine Clerkship Site
Director. Janice Huddleston is the Clerkship Coordinator.
The AHEC Northwest Family Medicine Residency has two clinic facilities. In March, 1993, the program
moved into its main clinic site in Fayetteville. This modern 18,000 square
foot facility is located on an attractive two-acre tract of land on the
northeastern border of Fayetteville. The Family Medicine Center is nestled
in surrounding hills in a pastoral-type setting. The facility is designed
and equipped with a goal of it serving as an effective training site for
eighteen resident physicians.
In April, 1996, the residency opened the Northwest Family Medical Center
in Springdale. This beautiful 8,600 square foot clinic located in the Jones
Center was developed to meet the demands of a growing population in
Northwest Arkansas and a growing interest in our program. Nine of our residents have their
Family Practice Clinics in this facility. Both clinics feature computerized
patient record systems.
The residency will be fully integrated between the two centers. Faculty
will supervise at both sites rather than be assigned exclusively to one or
the other. Resident rotations and call will be identical regardless of the
site at which the resident is assigned for outpatient clinics. Noon
conferences will be held jointly at the Fayetteville Family Practice Center,
which is an equal distance between Northwest Medical Center in Springdale
and Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.
The AHEC-NW Library is located on the AHEC-NW campus with a satellite library
located at Washington Regional Medical
Center. The library has 165 journal
subscriptions and approximately 1,500 textbooks and subscribes to three
videocassette series in obstetrics, general surgery and general medicine
along with the Audio-Digest in family practice and obstetrics/gynecology.
Services that the library offers include searches of the literature for
specific articles, interlibrary loan services and the compact disk version
of MEDLINE for literature searches to name a few.
Northwest Arkansas is known for its beautiful and rugged Ozark Mountains.
It is considered by many Arkansans to be the most desirable area to live in
the state. Money Magazine rated it as the seventh "Best Place to Live" in
the country (over 400 cities were ranked). Rand McNally’s "Retirement
Places" rated Northwest Arkansas among the top five places to retire in
America. Outside magazine has described Fayetteville as one of the "next
wave of dream towns" while the recently published book 50 Fabulous Places to
Raise Your Family ranked Northwest Arkansas as the 5th leading area for
quality of life. The local economy is incredibly strong with an unemployment
rate consistently at 3% or less. Because of the desirability of this region,
several major corporations have established their headquarters in this area.
With the main campus of the University of Arkansas being located in
Fayetteville, we have available all of the advantages of life in a college
town such as excellent restaurants, various cultural events and major
college sports. Because of our affiliation with UAMS, we are allowed access
to the University’s facilities here in Fayetteville. These facilities
include the university’s unequaled athletic building with its indoor
swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts, etc.
The residency program facilities are a short drive from the incredible
natural wonders of the Ozark Mountains. White water rivers, lakes for
fishing and boating, backpacking trails, caves, and sheer mountain cliffs
abound for your exploration. The Victorian city of Eureka Springs is less
than an hour’s drive and features the Great Passion Play, the breathtaking
Thorncrown Chapel and the Eureka Springs Botanical Gardens along with unique
shops for browsing.
