Dermatology Chair Appointment - Faculty Announcement

I am very pleased to announce that Cheryl A. Armstrong, M.D., has accepted the position of Chair of the Department of Dermatology. As many of you know, Dr. Armstrong joined our faculty in May 2008 and has served as Interim Chair of Dermatology since this past August, following the death of Dr. John Ansel.

Dr. Armstrong received her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1984. She completed a fellowship in Dermatology Research and a residency in Dermatology at Oregon Health Sciences University and then served on the faculty of OHSU from 1991 to 1994.

She relocated to the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology in 1994, was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1999, and received a joint appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology the following year. Dr. Armstrong served on the Dermatology faculty at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2002 through late 2004, when she joined the Department of Dermatology at the University of Colorado Denver. She received a joint appointment in the school’s Department of Ophthalmology the following year, serving until she and her longtime colleague, Dr. Ansel, were recruited to UAMS. She also was a staff physician at the partnering hospitals and VA affiliates of each of these institutions. She currently serves on the Dermatology Service at UAMS Medical Center and as Chief of the Dermatology Section at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.

Dr. Armstrong has been an active leader in residency education throughout her career. She has directed our Residency Program since December 2008 and serves on numerous UAMS and College of Medicine committees relating to graduate medical education, the Faculty Group Practice, UAMS Medical Center and medical student selection.

Dr. Armstrong’s NIH-supported research focuses on cutaneous inflammation and the role of both innate immunity and the cutaneous neurologic system on many common skin disorders. She is conducting preclinical studies to investigate the efficacy of novel topical molecules in the treatment of diseases such as eczema and the mechanisms by which successful agents appear to function. Dr. Armstrong has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery. She is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a member of numerous other professional organizations.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Armstrong and welcoming her to this new post.
