Center For Clinical Skills Education
Facilities
The Center for Clinical Skills Education is a state-of-the-art
facility for case development consultations, assessment, and teaching
of clinical
skills.
The Center has ten fully equipped patient examination
rooms for real time face-to-face interaction between student
and patient. Four additional rooms will be added in the near future.
Each room is equipped with dual cameras and two way audio response.
In addition, each room has two doors, one for students that opens
into a central corridor
and the other for Standardized Patients (Sp's) which leads to an
outside hallway.
This allows the SP to leave the room during a break and prevents
chance encounters with a student. The SP door is equipped with one-way
glass. An audio jack has been install just outside the
door which permits an instructor to listen and view an encounter
unobserved by the student. Each room has a wall mounted touch panel
that enables users to set camera angles and record the session on
a DVR and playback the session in the room
Stations are currently being designed for post encounters.
Wall units containing a table PC and keyboard will be located outside
each door in the central corridor. The area can be easily monitored
by one proctor and by video camera.
Instructors can control the pan-and-tilt cameras
in each exam room, digitally record the exam, and communicate
with the students via a microphone from a monitoring station in
the central observation room. The observation
room has 10 monitoring stations, each corresponding to an
exam room.4 additional stations will be brought on line in the
near future. Standardized Patients or instructors use tablet PC's
to score students electronically. The observation room also contains
a conference table, a white board, and a large screen plasma display
for viewing digital videos, exam rooms or computer presentations
The main control
room is located off the observation room.It contains monitoring
for security cameras, 14 Mac Minis for encoding video, 14 DVR's
to provide back up digital recording, a large screen plasma display,
a touch control panel for the plasma displays, the DVR's, a computerized
timer, and monitors in the exam rooms and observation room.
A small kitchen
area provides a place for Standardized Patients to take a
break and relax during testing. The area is equipped with a microwave,
a refrigerator, and a sink.
The Center has a large reception
area which includes shelves for backpacks and space for orientation
or debriefing. additional area is located right outside the front
door so that one group can begin orientation inside, while another
group can be debriefed outside.
