An introduction to the National Laboratory of Medical Molecular Biology

The National Laboratory of Medical Molecular Biology was established along the guidelines of China's mid-and long-term plan to develop science and technology, with special considerations to the urgent need to develop the medical sciences. It is the first and the only comprehensive State Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Biological Science. Located on the main campus of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in the center of Beijing, the laboratory is in close proximity to Peking Union Hospital and the famous PUMC library, ensuring an excellent environment for scientific research in connection with medical science. The National Laboratory was developed on the foundations of the Department of Biochemistry at PUMC, first established in the 1920s. Advanced molecular biology research work, such as that involving the structure/function relationship of protein and nucleic acids has been carried out here since the 50-60's. This history has brought about an accumulated wealth of research experience in the frontiers of biochemistry and a large number of highly qualified faculty members. In recent years, the National Laboratory has made efforts to develop scientific exchange and collaboration both domestically and internationally, Financed by various sources, the Lab has progressively established itself as a center with advanced equipment, technology and research staff of young and middle aged scientists (photo). Among the 16 professors in the laboratory, 2 are members of Academia Sinica and 6 are advisors for Ph.D. candidates. There are also associate professors and a number of technical assistants working in the Lab. In the last three years, 13 Ph.D. students and another 34 Master Degree students have studied in the Lab.
