The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), established in August 1956, is the country's largest multidisciplinary institution for biomedical research. The Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), which was set up in September 1917, is the only key medical university in China that carries an eight-year curriculum. CAMS and PUMC are under the leadership by the same governing body overseeing all affairs of medical research, education and patient care. 19 institutes and 6 hospitals are attached to CAMS & PUMC with a total staff of 11,145, including 8,000 specialists and technicians, 1262 professors and associate professors and 11 members of the Chinese Academica Sinica. Three National Key Laboratories, 4 Ministerial Key Laboratories and 2 National Key Industrial Pilot Plants have been set up by the government and 8 WHO Collaborating Centers have been designated in CAMS & PUMC. During the Seventh Five-Year Plan and the Eighth Five-Year Plan periods, CAMS & PUMC secured 706 national grants and 198 grants from the Ministry of Public Health. From 1956 to 1992, CAMS & PUMC has won 1137 awards in scientific research. Many of these scientific and technological achievements through technology transfer have been turned into products and applicable technology bearing great social and economic benefit. At present, there is more than 20 products and each gaining an annual output value of over 5 million-yuan (5,000,000 Renminbi). CAMS & PUMC is one of the first groups of academic institutions that were granted the authorities to engage in import and export activities by the government in 1993.
