The Samuel Moore Walton Memorial Chapel is located in on the first floor
of Ward Tower, room 1E90, at UAMS Medical Center. Ecumenical services at held
in the chapel each Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
The chapel serves UAMS Medical Center patients, family members, employees
and students as a non-denominational and interfaith "sacred space" for
worship, prayer and meditation.
Developed as a project of the UAMS Medical Center Pastoral Care Board, the
chapel was funded by a major grant from the Walton Family Foundation, Inc.
and gifts from members of the Board. The chapel is named in memory of Sam
Walton, founder of Wal-Mart Stores and a long-time member of the
Presbyterian Church.
Gene Castin of Stuck Associate Architects designed the chapel that features
seating for thirty, a waterfall, and a large stained glass piece by Arkansas
artist David Soos.
The Samuel Moore Walton Memorial Chapel was dedicated March 14, 1999. The
Reverend Wendell Griffen, Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church and Justice of
the Arkansas Court of Appeals, served as guest speaker. Special music was
provided by the Madrigal Choir of Parkview High School for the Arts and
Sciences.
