Tyrone F. Borders, Ph.D. is Associate Professor
of Health Policy and Management and
Epidemiology. Dr. Borders earned his Ph.D. in
Health Management and Policy, M.S. in
Epidemiology, and M.A. in Hospital and Health
Administration from The University of Iowa and
B.A. in Psychology (with Honors) from The
University of Kansas. Prior to joining the
faculty at UAMS, he was Assistant Professor and
Chief of the Division of Health Services
Research at the Texas Tech University School of
Medicine. Dr. Borders’ scholarly portfolio
focuses on the conduct and analysis of
population-based studies to identify subgroups
of persons at risk for poor health and problems
obtaining access to health services, with an
emphasis on rural populations. His research has
been funded by AHRQ, NIH, and the CDC and has
culminated in over 50 articles published in
prestigious journals including Addiction,
Medical Care, Health Services Research, The
American Journal of Public Health, The Journal
of Rural Health, and Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Borders’ current research focuses on the
epidemiology of alcohol and drug use and the
accessibility of substance use services in rural
areas. He recently was awarded a research grant
from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism (the only NIH grant ever awarded to
the Department of Health Policy and Management)
to investigate longitudinal trajectories in
alcohol use among rural methamphetamine and
cocaine users. Dr. Borders also serves as
Editor of The Journal of Rural Health,
the world’s foremost academic publication for
rural health research. In 2007, he was inducted
as a Fellow into the American College of
Epidemiology for sustained and substantial
contributions to the field of health services
epidemiology.
