The John Haley Memorial Environmental and Public Health Scholarship

John Haley maintained a lifelong interest in the environment and its impact on human health. John Haley's commitment to the continued education of Arkansans was greatly influenced by his father.

John and his wife Cynthia Haley worked tirelessly on projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize renewable energy sources to curtail dependence on foreign oil. Exemplary projects include the development of additives that increase fuel efficiency while reducing greenhouse exhaust emissions from diesel engines and development of technology for large scale conversion of biomass to diesel fuel.

The John Haley Environment and Public Health Scholarship is supported by the John Haley Memorial Trust. The John Haley Environment and Public Health Scholarship is dedicated to providing assistance to students accepted by or currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health (COPH). Applicants must demonstrate a MPH degree plan that emphasizes the training offered by the COPH department of Environmental and Occupational Health.

 

The Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to recognize the contributions of those faculty members who have made long-term contributions to the founding and continuation of the Master of Science Degree in Occupational and Environmental Health and the establishment of the EOH Department within the College of Public Health. Their contributions to the University of Arkansas and OEH students in particular are widely recognized within the professions of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health.

The Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Scholarship is dedicated to providing assistance to students accepted by or currently enrolled in the OEH MS or the MPH program of the department of Environmental and Occupational Health. Applicants must provide a MS degree plan that incorporates the training offered by the COPH department of Environmental and Occupational Health or a MPH degree plan that emphasizes environmental and occupational health.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Qualify for in-state tuition
  • Demonstration of financial need
  • Appropriate academic history
  • Funds not readily available from another source

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Commitment to environmental or occupational health training
  • Academic standing
  • Employment history ( Arkansas Industrial Hygiene Association Scholarship)
  • Commitment to long term residence in Arkansas ( John Haley Memorial Environmental and Public Health Scholarship)
  • Need

Scholarship funds may be requested to cover the costs of:

  • Tuition charges for courses offered by the department of Environmental and Occupational Health
  • Text books for courses in offered in the EOH program
  • Supplies and equipment required for student projects
  • Travel associated with student projects
  • Travel to professional meetings approved by the faculty advisor
  • Travel associated with presentation of results at professional meetings

Every student applying for admission to the MS OEH and MPH programs and students registering for courses offered by the EOH will be advised of the existence of the Arkansas Industrial Hygiene Association Scholarship, John Haley Memorial Environmental and Public Health Scholarship, and the Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Scholarship.

Application forms will be available in the EOH department and in the COPH Student Services office.

Requests for Scholarship funds will be reviewed by the EOH's Scholarship Committee.

The Scholarship Committee will be comprised of no fewer than three EOH faculty.

Requests for Scholarship funds will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee prior to the fall, spring and summer sessions.

All or part of a student's request may be funded.

Students receiving a favorable review of their written application will be interviewed by a committee member prior to the award of funds.

Any funds recovered by the student, for example the refund of tuition charges after a class is dropped, will be returned to the Scholarship fund.

Student awardees will be invited to attend a luncheon in their honor sponsored by the scholarship committee.
