Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacology
Pharmaceutical Sciences Track

General Information

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Track was established as a collaborative effort between the Departments of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The track functions as a part of the graduate program of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology.

In addition to the general rules and regulations specified by the University of Arkansas Graduate School (for details see the current issues of the Graduate School Catalog and the Graduate School Student Handbook), the Pharmacology Program has adopted specific requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacology.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Track provides an interdisciplinary educational opportunity for students to concentrate their studies in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. After acceptance into the Pharmacology Graduate Program, students may petition for admission into the Pharmaceutical Sciences Track. Students admitted to the Pharmaceutical Sciences Track are firstly members of the Pharmacology Graduate Program and subject to all regulations and requirements as stated in the Pharmacology Program Document entitled Admission Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program.

To fulfill the requirements for a Ph.D., a student must satisfactorily complete the required course work (see Curriculum for the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track), pass the Candidacy Examination, complete a written dissertation based on his/her laboratory work, and pass the Final Examination (dissertation defense).

Course Curriculum

The Curriculum for the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track shows the general outline of a four-year curriculum in the Pharmacology Graduate Program. All students shall register for the required courses, seminar and other credits as described in the Curriculum. The advisor and the student will determine the electives taken by each graduate student. A minimum of six hours of elective didactic course work is required.

Program Duration

Usually four years of graduate study are required for the Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology. A student must accumulate a minimum of 72 graduate credit hours, of which at least 25 credit hours must be formal course work (didactic - for more information see Curriculum for the Ph.D. Graduate Program in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences Track). Eighteen (18) credit hours must be Doctoral Dissertation (PCOL 700V). The numbers of research credit hours are not specified. According to the general rules of the University of Arkansas Graduate School, a student must complete the degree within seven consecutive calendar years from the date of the Declaration.
