APhA Awards 
APhA 2008Two College of Pharmacy faculty members and three students won prestigious national awards at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) annual meeting in San Diego in March. Click here for APhA Release
SRDG and MALTO Meetings on Campus
The 2008 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Southern Regional Discussion Group (SRDG) PharmForum meeting and the 2008 Annual Medicinal Chemistry Meeting of the MALTO states were hosted by the College in May, and according to Bill Gurley, were a booming success!
Faculty Briefs
Pharmaceutical Press agreed to a contract with Philip Breen for his textbook on basic pharmacokinetics which should enter production this summer to be released in the fall of 2008.

Stephanie Gardner has been selected to receive the Dale Bumpers Area Health Education Leadership Award at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The award will be presented at the Regional Programs Advisory Council meeting on October 16. It was created to recognize exemplary leadership that results in outstanding achievement of AHEC Program goals, specifically, leadership sustained over considerable time and having significant impact on the statewide program. Recipients are selected by the AHEC directors.
 
Chenghui Li
has received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program (SAPRP) of RWJF to study the Impact of Arkansas Medicaid Coverage Expansion and Change in Prior Authorization Procedure on Utilization of Tobacco Cessation Treatment among Arkansas Medicaid Enrollees.
 
Dwight Pierce
as Principal Investigator and collaborator Kim Light received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study mechanisms responsible for fetal alcohol syndrome.
 
Melanie Reinhardt
was selected by the student body as Rho Chi Teacher of the Year. The award was presented at the Awards Ceremony on April 21.
 
Qayyim Said
has received a grant from the Tailored Biobehavioral Interventions Research Center (TBRIC). His research team that includes Chenghui Li, Jan Hastings, and Donna West from the College and Elaine Souder from the College of Nursing. They will study the Effect of Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage Gap on Medication Adherence.
Development News
The College has received a gift of $100,000 from alumni Karrol and Vicki Fowlkes of Salem and a $25,000 gift from Royce and Rita Wilson of Batesville to help establish an endowed Dean's Chair for new academic programs, faculty recruitment and retention, and student leadership activities. The gifts will go toward a goal of $1 million, to provide unrestricted funds to be used by the current and future deans to advance the College of Pharmacy. The College is halfway to our campaign goal o f $4 million.
 
The College received a gift of $10,000 in February from State Senator Percy Malone and Allcare Pharmacies that put us over the goal of a $100,000 for the Arkansas Opportunity Scholarship endowment (formerly National Pharmacists of Arkansas Scholarship Endowment). Dr. Alvin Simmons conceived this project and has provided both gifts and leadership in seeking to secure donors. 
 
Wal-Mart is underwriting the High School Pharmacy Camp, to be held on campus June 15-20, with a gift of $8,000, that will pay half of the tuition of all the students.
Student Highlights  

Our P1 ASP members organized the College's Diabetes Walk and raised $7,620 for the ADA - this was the most money raised by any team participating in the Central Arkansas Walk. Congratulations to the first year class on this outstanding effort. 
 
Degrees were awarded to 114 Pharmacy graduates on May 17.

Three students, Clint Boone, Zach Holderfield, and Bryant Sizemore, recently returned  from Washington, D.C., where they attended the National Community Pharmacists Association's (NCPA) 40th Annual Conference on National Legislation and Government Affairs. The conference was attended by nearly 500 pharmacists from around the country. (See header photo).
 
Mandy BillingsleyMandy Billingsley of Morrilton won the Faculty Gold Key Award for the highest scholastic record during her pharmacy college career.
 

Erin Beth Hays

received an APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management (APhA-APPM) Presentation Merit Award, for research conducted with Denise Hopkins, Joseph A. Banken, and Nafisa Dajani, at the 2008 APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Presentation Merit Award Announced.
 
Jared Brown has received the Wal-Mart "RESPy" Award (acronym for Respect, Excellence and Service in Pharmacy). The award is given to a student showing outstanding and exemplary behavior and great potential as a community pharmacist.

Amy Franks received the Outstanding Faculty Award in Pharmacy Practice.
Russ Melchert was selected to give the Address to the Class.
Melanie Pilcher was named Preceptor of the Year.
Melanie Reinhardt received the Outstanding Faculty Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Alumna Jane Gault Receives Dean's Award

Jane Gault '71, chief of pharmacy service at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, received the Dean's Annual Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Practice of Pharmacy on May 16 at the College of Pharmacy's Senior Honors Convocation. The award is given annually based on nominations from members of the Executive Committee of the college. She was nominated for her high achievement and recognition in her profession by her peers for excellence in professional practice, for maintaining an affinity with UAMS and for reflecting favorably upon the UAMS College Pharmacy.

Farewell to Shelley!
The College said "Farewell" to Shelley Humphrey on May 22, who has worked in the Dean's office for three years. She will move with her husband Landon to Shreveport, La., where he will be a medical resident.
