Happy Holidays!

We've had a productive and extremely busy semester, highlighted by a successful ACPE site visit, laboratory construction, and highly active students and alumni. I want to thank you for your hard work on behalf of our students and our College. We are in excellent shape, both fiscally and physically, as we enter the spring semester of our 56th year. Welcome Back Rob!

Rob RichardsonRob Richardson received the Bronze Star Medal from the US Army, for exceptionally meritorious service while serving as the Pharmacy Consultant for Task Force 3d Medical Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08. His strategic guidance on pharmaceutical care directly improved the health of US and Coalition forces during combat operations in Iraq. He standardized Self Medication programs and strengthened security policies for narcotics and controlled substances, enhancing operations throughout theater. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, Task Force 3d Medical Command, Multi-National Corps - Iraq, and the United States Army. He also received the U.S. Army Reserve Pharmacy Officer of the Year Award.

Celeste Crittenden- Anthony, Business Administrator for the College, retired on November 29. "She has been a vital part of this College for many years. She started at UAMS in 1969, and has served the institution well for over 38 years," said Dean Gardner. A reception was held for her in the conference room on her last day. Vice Chancellor and former Dean Larry Milne and Celeste's family were special guests at the reception. 

Successful Tailgate Party

More than 125 alumni, faculty, and guests were on hand for the College's Annual Razorback Tailgate Party on November 17.  Thanks to Cardinal Health, McKesson, McQueary Brothers, and Medicine Shoppe for co-sponsoring the party!
Faculty Women Win Tourney! Winning Team
The ASP sponsored a volleyball tournament last month.  It was fun and a good way for the students to relieve stress.  Amazingly, the faculty-staff team won first place in the women's division.  Team members included Jan Hastings, Holly Maples, Cindy Stowe, Paige Brumley, Schwanda Flowers, Tina Ward, and Nicki Hilliard.

Howell Foster was featured on KTHV-Channel 11 news on December 10, in a news story about lead poisoning in children. 

 

Jan Hastings participated in the 2007 Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA), held October 4-6 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was one of 46 college of pharmacy faculty members representing schools and colleges of pharmacy from across the country.

 

Grazyna Nowak  mentored  Zabeena Shaikm who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in December and to numerous honors and completion of her dissertation research, including American Heart Association pre-doctoral fellowship, Best Graduate Student Paper award at the national Experimental Biology meeting in 2006, Best Graduate Student Poster award at UAMS Student Research Week in 2007, and the Graduate Student Achievement Award in 2007. Shaik has accepted a post-doctoral fellowship with Professor Renato V. Iozzo at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. 

 

Rajesh Vadlapatla has accepted a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor at Pacific University School of Pharmacy in Oregon.  Vadlapatla will be joining the Pacific University faculty immediately, so we wish him farewell and best of luck!  Cherng-ju Kim, Raj's graduate advisor, has had a tremendous impact on Raj's career development. 

Student Highlights
Chris Hutts, P3 from Jonesboro, has received the NCPA Presidential Scholarship for 2007. Candidates were evaluated on scholastics success, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and accomplishments, and had to demonstrate an interest in independent pharmacy.

 

Leslie Mooney will receive an APhA-ASP Student Leadership Award at the APhA meeting in March. She is one of only four who will be awarded nationally.

Board Certified BPS certificate

Trey Crumby, Kendrea Muldrew, Jason Hawkins, and  Kelly Thomas all successfully passed the Board Certification Exam in Pharmacotherapy and they now hold the title of "Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist" (BCPS).  There are currently 34 board certified pharmacists in Arkansas.  Congratulations to the newest members of the club!

Distinguished Achievement  
Hilliard

Nicki Hilliard  will receive the William H. Briner Distinguished Achievement Award in Nuclear Pharmacy Practice at the APhA meeting in March in San Diego. This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within nuclear pharmacy practice.

These College of Pharmacy faculty members were presented with UAMS Service Awards at receptions in October.  15 Years,  Eddie Dunn, Paul Gubbins; 10 Years, Julie Briere; and 5 Years, Kat Neill,Brion Patrick.The late John Sorenson received an award for 30 Years of service.
