Graduation Activities cap the 2009 Year |
|

The College held graduation activities for 85 seniors on May 15 and 16,
beginning with a senior meeting on campus. The students were inducted into
the Alumni Association and the Arkansas Pharmacists Association, which
sponsored a lunch for them during the meeting. At the Hooding Ceremony,
Jan Hastings served as the announcer, and hooders were Russ
Melchert and Melanie Reinhardt. Charles
Born was the faculty speaker, and Peter Dipple
presented the address from the class. Bret Weatherford
received the Faculty Gold Key Award, given to the student with the highest

| Jan Hastings elected President of APA |
Jan Hastings was installed as President of the Arkansas Pharmacists Association (APA) on June 12. She served as Area III Representative from 2001 to 2007. She is the first College of Pharmacy faculty member to serve as President, as well as the

Phil Breen has co-authored a new textbook titled Basic Pharmacokinetics,which is now available in bookstores.
Niki Carver and her husband Klynt welcomed Tyler Landon Carver on February 26.
Trey Crumby will resign his position as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice effective August 31. He has been at the St. Mary's Medical Center in Rogers for the past three years. Good luck Trey, and all the best! Lilia Lopez-Becerra was named the SNPhA 2009 Teacher of the Year at the 15th annual National Pharmacist Association of Arkansas Scholarship and Award Banquet, co-sponsored by SNPhA, held in April at the Little Rock Hilton.
Eddie Dunn was presented an award from the APhA-ASP 2008-2009 Executive Committee for his support and guidance as the faculty advisor, at the April meeting.
Eddie Dunn received the 2009 Bowl of Hygeia and Arkansas Pharmacists Association (APA) Community Service Awards at the APA Convention on June 12. Both awards are presented to a pharmacist who has achieved an outstanding record of service in his community. The Bowl of Hygeia is co-sponsored by the Wyeth-Ayerst Company, and is part of a national awards program which recognizes one pharmacist from each state for outstanding community service.
Sarah Frank is the recipient of the APA's Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award. It recognizes pharmacists who have practiced for ten years or less, and have made significant contributions to the profession and community.
Amy Franks has been selected to attend the Focused Investigator Training Program at the University of Utah in July. This career development program, established by the ACCP Research Institute, is an intensive hands-on workshop for investigators who want to create a focused, competitive grant application that will support a significant extramural grant application. Bill Gurley has been appointed to the editorial board of the medical journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. Martin Hauer-Jensen served on the Radiation Therapy and Biology (RTB)Study Section of the National Institutes of Health in June. The RTB Study Section reviews applications on therapeutic interactions of ionizing radiation, radionuclides, electromagnetic radiation, and heat at the molecular, cellular, organ and patient levels. Grazyna Nowak received an honorable mention for her lesson plan created for the SoftChalk website 2009 Lesson Challenge, in the graduate category. More than 85 entries were judged on lesson creativity, professionalism and interactivity. Eric Schneider has been named Associate Dean for the Northwest Arkansas Satellite Campus. He will be responsible for faculty recruitment and development and will manage programmatic issues and student affairs. Ashley Stinnett has accepted the non-tenure track, critical care faculty position, jointly funded with the University Hospital. She will join the College after completing her residency. She also recently received the Pharmacy Practice "Rock Star" Resident Award, accepting the award from Seth Heldenbrand in the photo at left. Jeremy Thomas will join the College in the non-tenure track, primary care faculty position on July 1. |
| Faculty, Students,Alumni assist APA at clinic |
 Twenty students, faculty and alumni assisted at the APA's charitable pharmacy at the Mission of Mercy dental clinic, held at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale in May. More than 1,100 prescriptions were dispensed to patients. Faculty, alumni and friends who assisted were Shawna Bailey '01, Justin Boyd '00, Lois Coulter, Gary Fancher, Sarah Frank '08, Spencer Mabry '01, Anne Pace, Scott Pace '01, Bruce Powers, and John Vinson '04. The ten students participating were P2s Rachel Grubb, Lee Hollingsworth, Daniel Price, and Elizabeth Trotter, and P3s Lacy Bassham, Lisa Hatfield, Randy Kassissieh, Haley Ray, Collin Ward, and Megan Wilson. |

College hosts annual Pharmacy Camp |

Thirty-three high school seniors participated in the third annual Pharmacy Camp in June, sponsored by the APA. They made lip balms in the Compounding Lab, attended lectures on topics such as Hypertension and careers in pharmacy, and toured the UAMS campus. For fun, the campers spent an afternoon at the River Market and the Clinton Presidential Library as well as rock climbing and bowling. |
| APhA-ASP wins Chapter of the Year |
 The College's APhA-ASP chapter received the Chapter of the Year award for the second time in four years in April, competing with all colleges nationwide. The award was presented at the annual APhA-ASP convention in San Antonio, Tex. Almost 70 students attended as representatives of APhA-ASP, and the award was accepted by Leslie Mooney '09, who served as president during the year on which the judging was based. |

 The College is hosting its first exchange students, Martine de Ponti and Laura Hoekzema, from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. They are fourth year students of the six-year program at the University. They will shadow faculty members over the next several weeks, assist during Pharmacy Camp, and have planned a trip to New York City before leaving the United States on July 5.
P4s Eric Wright, Clint Boone, Beth Ann Davenport and Zach Goldman attended the 2009 Armada Specialty Pharmacy Summit in Las Vegas, Nev. in March. The three day conference included business sessions and interactive educational programs focused on a variety of important specialty pharmacy issues. The students contacted Armada Healthcare to learn more about specialty pharmacy for the NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition, which led to the invitation to the Summit.
P4 Zach Holderfield recently donated 11 inches of his hair to the Locks of Love organization. It provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18, who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. He grew his hair over the past three years.
P3 Christy Agee has been selected to receive the 2009 National Association of Nuclear Pharmacies Outstanding Nuclear Pharmacy Student Scholarship. This is the first year the scholarship has been awarded. She competed against students throughout the country, and will receive $2,000. At the annual SNPhA-NPAA Scholarships and Awards Banquet in April,the first H. Otis Tyler SNPHA Pharmacist of the Year Award was awarded to Jerrell Johnson '01, who contributed to numerous projects in conjunction with SNPhA during 2008-2009.
Members of the Student Leadership Program recently attended a Leadership Retreat and completed the ropes course at the 4-H Center in Little Rock, capping off the first year of the program. Students have participated in a book club and had guest speakers who discussed leadership concepts.  P4 Clint Boone, P3s Bryna McKenna and Collin Ward, and P4 Zack Holderfield attended the National Community Pharmacists Association Legislative Affairs Meeting in Washington, D.C. in May. They visited with several Arkansas legislators, including Mark Pryor, pictured above.
Leslie Mooney '09 was awarded a travel scholarship through the AACP/Walmart Annual Conference Scholarship Program to attend the AACP Meeting in Boston, Mass. in July.
 Students offered free glucose and cholesterol screenings at the inaugural UAMS Cardiovascular Health Day. It was a collaborative effort among the Colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, along with the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition. UPDATE: The Kappa Epsilon's Battle of the Greeks held in March raised $400 to help fund the College's 2009 Pharmacy Camp. | |

The College received a gift of $15,000 from the Arkansas Pharmacists Association Foundation to fund the High School Pharmacy Camp. In addition to funding the camp, the Association will partner with the College to recommend students for the Camp. The Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy has made a gift of $500,000 to establish a loan program for Pharmacy students. The Board has also made an additional $50,000 gift to the program for this year and may make additional transfers of money in future years. Graduates who have received aid from the Program will have their entire grant, plus interest, forgiven if they practice pharmacy full-time for three years in a community with less than 15,000 residents, located at least 15 miles from any incorporated municipality with a population of 50,000. Students may apply for these loans beginning in August. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has approved a gift of $100,000 to the College of Pharmacy from the settlement of a class action lawsuit related to the drug Oxycontin®. The money will be applied to increasing the endowment of the Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Professorship presently held by Kim Light. Plans are in place to name it the Lester E. Hosto Endowed Chair in Addiction and Recovery. Income from the Chair will increase support for the college's educational and service programs aimed at reducing the human toll caused by the illness of addiction. The Board of the Arkansas Pharmacists Association at its June meeting approved a gift of $100,000 from its Foundation to the Dean's Endowed Chair in Pharmacy. This gift will move the College closer to its goal of raising $1 million for its first Chair. Income from the Chair will be used to support student and faculty activities that advance the mission of the college. | |
