About RESNET

RESNET has been developed over the years by the College of Medicine (COM) and individual researchers to help satisfy the unique needs of researchers.  The COM Research Support Net consists of a domain called COMRES (College of Medicine Research) and associated hardware.  RESNET is the name of the primary file server and RSAD is the name of the main print server in the research domain.  Researchers often refer to all of the Research Support Net simply as RESNET.   There are about 25-30 servers in the domain servicing researchers on the UAMS campus, Arkansas Children's Hospital and at the Little Rock and North Little Rock VA hospitals.

There are three full-time technical support people who are available to solve connectivity, hardware and software problems.  Dean Wright manages the COM Research Support Net with the help of Jason Alexander and Buddy (Clarence) Presley.  They are under the oversight of the Executive Associate Dean for Research in the College of Medicine, Dr. Lawrence Cornett, Ph.D.

The RESNET staff consults across a number of different computer hardware systems, operating systems and several classes of computer software.  Research Support Net equipment is located in the Shorey Building, Biomedical Research Center One and The Institute on Aging.  We assess and plan for the maintenance, acquisition, installation, administration and disaster recovery of RESNET hardware and software.

The Research Support Net works closely with other Information Technology (IT) personnel on campus to provide for IT needs.  Services provided by RESNET include file and print services, storage area network (SAN) data warehousing, tape and disk backup and restore, database warehousing, and server installation, administration and maintenance for the development and service of research applications.

One of the tools used by researchers on campus is called GENIE.  GENIE is the name of the gene database server available for researchers use.  Accelrys, formerly GCG which is also known as the Wisconsin Package, maintains gene banks and protein databases used in research.  They maintain the software used for searching and manipulating these sources of information.  Many researchers, their students and staff access this system on a regular basis through the web interface called SeqWeb. The hardware on which this software runs is an IBM p615 RISC based server.

The College of Medicine Research Support Net has put an enormous effort into technical support for the research community over the years.  The research community has built an IT network that has the flexibility and resources to meet their particular needs.  With cost constraints and the technical challenges of research the IT needs of researchers will continue to be a challenge.  The continued development of RESNET will help satisfy these needs.  The Research Support Net staff provides technical information for decision making and the support of IT research software and hardware.  RESNET's purpose is to facilitate the research of researchers at UAMS.

"Whenever a system becomes completely defined, someone discovers something which either abolishes the system or expands it beyond recognition". - Brooke's Law
