Potential NIH and Grants.gov Software Problem

NIH grant application packages must be opened with software that is compatible with Grants.gov. Your computer may open the file automatically (with a different/wrong version).

The compatible version of Adobe Reader is required for viewing, editing and submitting a complete grant application package to Grants.gov. All edits made to the Adobe Reader application package must be made with the compatible version of Adobe Reader. To view/apply for grants, please download and install the compatible version of Adobe Reader located on the download software page (free software; no cost to download, install or use the software).

Click here for more information about Adobe Reader and Grants.gov.  Click on the section called Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader 8.1.1 and 8.1.2 are listed as working reliably. Everything else will corrupt the file, even older versions of Reader. You will not be able to see this corruption, but it will not import correctly into the NIH database. Grants.gov does not guarantee user support to Adobe Reader versions that are not compatible with Grants.gov requirements.

Problem:

Your computer may automatically open the file (with a different/wrong version). This will be invisible to you and everything will work fine until you try to save it back to NIH/Grants.gov.

If you have received one of the following error messages, please verify that the package has not been opened or edited with any software other Adobe Reader 8.1.1 and 8.1.2.

Error Message 1: Error: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException:
Error Message 2: "Schema Validation Error"

These errors indicate the form was opened with unsupported software such as: Adobe Professional, Adobe Acrobat, a incompatible version of Adobe Reader, or other software.

*Grants.gov recommends downloading both PureEdge and the compatible version of Adobe Reader to seamlessly apply for grants. However, Grants.gov is currently transitioning to phase out of PureEdge software and instead using Adobe Reader exclusively. For a period of time, applicants will still be able to use PureEdge as it is applicable.

 Solution:

  1. Double click 'my computer' on your 'desktop'.

  2. At the top of the window, select 'tools', then 'folder options'.

  3. Select the 'files types' tab, then scroll down to 'PDF' under the 'extensions column'.

  4. Highlight the 'PDF' column with a single click and then click the 'change' button.

  5. You should be able to select 'adobe reader' from this list, make sure the 'always use the selected program' box is checked.

  6. Then click 'apply' and then 'ok' and close the 'my computer' box.

  7. The NIH file will have to be saved to the desktop by 'right clicking' the file and choosing 'save target as'  with the desktop as the destination.

  8. The saved filed file can then be opened by 'right clicking' it and selecting 'open with Adobe Reader ' instead of Acrobat Professional.
