Determining Your Aid Amounts
Student Financial Aid is available to
College of Medicine students in the form of scholarships and loans. The
maximum amount of financial aid you may receive each academic year,
regarwdless of the source, will equal your
COST OF ATTENDANCE.
First We Determine Your Need-Based Aid
Once you file your Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA),
the Financial Aid Office will use your resulting Expected Family
Contribution (EFC) to determine your
eligibility for need-based aid, such as the Subsidized Stafford Loan or need-based scholarships. We will do this by subtracting your EFC
from your Cost of Attendance.
Cost of Attendance
- Expected Family Contribution
= Eligibility for Need-Based Aid
(such as the Subsidized Stafford Loan)
Then We Determine Your Non-Need-Based Aid
The Financial Aid Office will always
determine how much you are eligible to receive in Need-Based Aid first, for these programs
are always more beneficial to the student. Then we recommend that you do contribute to
your education the amount the Department of Education specifies in your
Expected Family Contribution, but we also
realize that is just not always possible. Therefore, federal regulations will allow us to
replace your Expected Family Contribution with non-need-based aid, such as the
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan or the Graduate Plus Loan. We determine how much you are eligible to receive in
non-need-based aid by subtracting the amount you are receiving in need-based aid from your
Cost of Attendance. Your Expected Family Contribution is not a factor in
the determination for non-need-based aid.
Cost of Attendance
- Need-Based Aid (Subsidized Stafford Loan)
- Any Other Student Aid
(Scholarships)
= Eligibility for Non-Need-Based Aid
(Unsubsidized Stafford Loan)
Remember that it is your responsibility to
apply for scholarships and loans by completing the Scholarship
Application and the appropriate loan application. Completing the FAFSA will only determine how much
of your aid can be need-based, and how much of your aid must be non-need
based. Completing a loan application will let us know what type of
loan you would like and how much you will be requesting. You do not have to apply for the
maximum amount of financial aid that you are eligible to receive if you
do not need that much assistance.
