Overview of Applying for Financial Aid

1. File your 2009 Federal Income Tax Return.
   
    
2. File the Department of Education’s 2010-2011 FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) if:

• you want to apply for any federal financial aid, such as Stafford loans or Primary Care Loans.
• you want to be considered for any of the College of Medicine’s need-based scholarships.
   

3. Submit a Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid Office by April 26, if you would like to apply for any of the College of Medicine's institutional Scholarships.  We encourage all students to apply.

• SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION for freshmen
    or  

• SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION for upperclassmen
   

• RURAL PRACTICE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION - if you are an Arkansas resident and are interested in practicing primary care in rural Arkansas. (Please note the earlier application deadline for this program.)
   

4. If you wish to apply for loans, complete the appropriate Loan Application and return to the Financial Aid Office by April 26:

• STAFFORD LOAN PROCESSING SHEET - if you wish to apply for Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Stafford loans.
• GRADUATE PLUS LOAN PROCESSING SHEET - mainly for non-Arkansas residents, and those whose Cost of Attendance has been increased above the federal annual limit for Stafford Loans.
• PRIMARY CARE LOAN INTEREST FORM - only if you are willing to commit to practicing primary care and are interested in a Primary Care Loan.
   

5.   Sign the appropriate Promissory Note for any loan that you are applying for:

Stafford Loans:  Sign online at  www.dlenote.ed.gov

Graduate Plus Loans:  Sign online at www.dlenote.ed.gov

Primary Care Loans:  You should receive a promissory note from the UAMS Office of Student Financial Services
 

6. Complete Stafford and Graduate Plus Combined Loan Entrance Counseling online at www.mappingyourfuture.org if you will be applying for any Stafford or Graduate PLUS loans, and have not previously completed your entrance counseling requirement with the UAMS College of Medicine.
