Computer Budget Adjustment
We will allow an increase of up to $1,500
in your Cost of Attendance Budget for the purchase of a computer. You may use the computer
budget adjustment at anytime during your four years of medical school. Once you have used
your $1,500 allotment, we will not increase your budget for any more computer-related
costs.
Please note that we are not offering a specific type of loan to cover
computer purchases. The application below serves only to request that
your total Cost of Attendance (the total amount of financial aid that
you can receive) be increased for the year. Once your Cost of Attendance has been increased, you will need to submit the appropriate
loan application. The majority of students request additional
Unsubsidized Stafford Loans to cover the cost of their computer
purchase. However, our current Cost of Attendance for each class
is very close to the federal annual limit on
combined Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, so some students
may have
already been awarded the federal maximum in Stafford Loans for the year.
So please be aware that even if we increase your Cost of Attendance
Budget for the purchase of a computer, we CANNOT increase your Stafford
Loans beyond the federal annual limit for your class year. Once you receive the maximum in
Stafford Loans, your best option would be the Graduate PLUS Loan, but
keep in mind that a credit check is involved with this type of federal
loan or with any type of private loan.
All computer purchases must be made within the
academic year that you request the budget increase;
however, we will approve receipts dated up to
30 days before the first day of class for incoming
freshmen. Therefore, if your computer purchase was made
prior to thirty days before registering as an incoming student, we
cannot approve your request.
If you would like the Financial Aid Office
to increase your Cost of Attendance Budget to cover the cost of your computer, please
submit to us the following:
Note that Stafford Loans and Plus Loans are disbursed in
two equal installments, the first half at registration (or within 2 to 3
weeks following the date you application is submitted if you submit your
request after registration), and the second half at mid-term in January. So if you purchase your
computer in the fall, you will not receive the full amount of your loan right away
(unless you are receiving Primary Care Loans).
