Cost of Attendance Increases

Please contact the Student Financial Aid office if you have any special circumstances that you believe would warrant an increase in your Cost of Attendance Budget; but remember student financial aid is designed to meet the most basic educational needs of students.  The Financial Aid Office will approve requests on a case by case basis. Receipts will be required. Some expenses cannot be covered with educational aid, so if you are entering medical school with these types of debt, you will need to have an alternative source of funds (savings, family support, or spousal income) to pay for these costs.  The following is a list of expenses that can be used in increasing your Cost of Attendance Budget and a list of expenses that cannot be used to increase your budget.

Allowable Expenses

Child Care Expenses: You may request that reasonable child care costs be included in your budget, but your spouse will be expected to contribute to those costs.

Medical Expenses: Health care costs not covered by your insurance can be added to your budget.

Automobile Repairs: Repairs to keep your car in safe and running condition can be added to your budget. Routine maintenance and cosmetic repairs will not be approved.

Computer Purchase: We will increase your budget up to $1,500 for the purchase of a computer.

Unallowable Expenses

Relocation expenses: The cost of moving to Little Rock, including security deposits, furnishings, etc., cannot be included in your budget. Entering students are cautioned to plan carefully for the cost of moving.

Automobile payments or purchases:The amount of financial aid allocated for living expenses in the standard student Cost of Attendance Budget is yours to budget as you see fit, but we cannot increase your educational aid for the purchase of an automobile.

Consumer debts: We cannot increase your budget to cover the monthly payment on any consumer debt, such as bank loans, credit card obligations, or any other debt you may have established prior to medical school.
