UAMS Race & Ethnic Health Disparities Task Force
Genesis
In early 2005, a racially and ethnically diverse group of faculty, administrators, and staff formed the UAMS Race and Ethnic Health Disparities Task Force. They organized around a common concern: racial and ethnic health and health care disparities in Arkansas. They organized in response to three reports, the Institute of Medicine’s Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care (2002), Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions, A Report of the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce (2004) and the Arkansas Racial and Ethnic Health Disparity Study. These reports charged health care providers and institutions to respond forcefully to the grave and growing problem of racial and ethnic healthcare disparities.
Mission
The Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities Task Force will advance efforts at UAMS to reduce and eliminate health and health care disparities by providing:
- Information about causes of racial and ethnic health and health care disparities and their presence in the UAMS system, and
- Recommendations on evidence-based approaches and strategies to reduce and eliminate racial and ethnic health and health care disparities that exist in the UAMS system.
Focus Areas
The three focus areas of the task force efforts shall be:
- Access to and quality of care provided by UAMS
- Minority recruitment and retention of faculty, students and staff at the UAMS Medical Center and colleges
- Cultural competency in college curricula and continuing education at UAMS
