THE UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
(USSEP)

Application Deadline: March 21, 2008

The Center for Diversity Affairs, College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, will sponsor the Undergraduate Summer Science Enrichment Program (USSEP) for the summer of 2008.1 This intensive program is designed for underrepresented minority and/or disadvantaged students interested in a health profession career, specifically medicine. The aim of the program is to provide instruction in concepts and skills necessary to succeed and graduate from a health professions program. USSEP is divided into two phases that are described below:

Undergraduate Summer Science Enrichment Program Phase I

  • Target: Undergraduate freshmen and sophomores
  • Focus: To build core sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry)
    • Participants in this program will be introduced to the course work and information that is designed to enhance their academic skills in:
    • Sciences basic to the study of medicine
    • Analysis and presentation of scientific writing
    • Problem solving skills
    • Medical Terminology
    • Clinical observations
  • Application deadline: March 21, 2008
  • Program dates: May 19 - June 27, 2008

Undergraduate Summer Science Enrichment Program Phase II

  • Target: Undergraduate juniors and seniors
  • Focus: MCAT preparation facilitated by Kaplan
  • Application deadline: March 21, 2008
  • Program dates: July 7 - August 1, 2008 (Tentative Date)

To be eligible for participation in this program, students must meet one or more of the following criteria:

Be an Underrepresented Minority: (African American, Native American, Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or Vietnamese) OR

Economic Disadvantage: Based on parental income and the number and ages of dependents in a household as established by these federal guidelines:

Educational Disadvantage: defined as a student that comes from an environment which has inhibited their attainment of knowledge, skills and abilities required to enroll in and graduate from a health professions school.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Please type or print in black ink.
  2. Eligibility: Must currently be a freshman, sophomore, or junior (see Phase I and Phase II descriptions above) with a minimum GPA of 2.7 and meet one or more of the above criteria to apply.
  3. Complete ALL sections of the application that apply to you. Any spaces left blank will delay processing of application. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  4. Transcripts: An official transcript(s) should be issued from all colleges attended. Contact the college registrar to send official transcript(s) to the address below.
  5. Letters of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation must be submitted from two people familiar with your academic work in the sciences (science faculty or instructor). See the two Reference Request forms for further instructions.
